BookWorm: Good News Nelson

I adore the author, Jodi Moore, and ever since we first read When a Dragon Moves In, I've been looking forward to her new book. (Click here to read my interview with Jodi from this summer).

Her new book made it's debut just before Christmas last year, and it was a wonderful gift to receive the package from StoryPie Press in the mail.  Good News Nelson is a wonderful story about a paper boy who makes a difference in his community by doing small things.

Here's the official book description:

Nelson delivers the news. Cranky old Mrs. Snodberry complains about the news. But when the headlines expose the plight of 100 abandoned cats, they both realize that the news is more than just a paper on a doorstep. Challenged by Mrs. Snodberry's statement that "no one cares anymore," Nelson develops a plan that will not only help the animal shelter, the cats, and ultimately the environment, but a plan that just might change Mrs. Snodberry's pessimistic view of the world. The story dramatizes that children can do big things...and that bad news can turn to good news when everyone works together.

I was a bit surprised how different Good News Nelson is from her last work, but not at all disappointed.  While When a Dragon Moves In is a sort of fanciful, lighthearted book,
Good News Nelson definitely has more of a moral.  I enjoyed reading this one to Ethan especially, who is old enough to grasp the concept of doing nice things for other people.

Cats are Olivia's favorite animal, so while the story is too long for her, she likes looking through it to find the cats.
I highly recommend this book for children 4+ as it truly does have a great message.  As for me, I have a soft spot for Mrs. Snodberry (don't you just love the name?!), who clearly just needs a friend.

And maybe a hug.

I hope you enjoy reading this with your favorite little ones, and enjoy a hug afterward, too.

  2. Welcome aboard the hop, so great to have you. Good News Nelson sounds just what I want Gigi to read too when she is a little older. I think any book with a theme that encourages children to make a difference is a book I would like on my future shelf. Thanks for a great review cheers Julie Grasso
